Carers' Chat

'Carers’ Chat' is a facility enabling support and guidance ‘by carers for carers’.

Anyone supporting someone with an eating disorder can access the chats at the allocated times, to ‘chat’ with other carers, to seek support or offer support to others and to share experiences and useful information: parents, siblings, partners, other relatives, friends and housemates are all welcome.

Currently, Carers' Chat is run fortnightly, on alternate Tuesdays, from 7:30 to 8:30pm.

We have plans to expand this facility to include specific chats for siblings. There are also plans to provide a one-to-one chat service for those who would benefit from this type of support – there has been a lot of support for this amongst Carers’ Ambassadors.

Carers' Chat Rules:

We want the Carers’ Chats to be an opportunity for you to ‘chat’ openly with other carers. As such we don’t want the rules governing the chats to be too restrictive.

However, it’s essential to have some rules in place. The following list was developed in consultation with Carers’ Ambassadors. Please note this is not exhaustive – the intention is it may be added to at a future date if this is deemed necessary.

  • Be mindful of your boundaries when disclosing personal and family details – respect the wishes of family members (not just the person suffering from an eating disorder) who may not wish to be named
  • Weight may be discussed, but please refrain from using numbers: low weight, lost weight, gained weight or overweight all exemplify how current weight and changes in weight can be clearly conveyed without mentioning specific numbers
  • Experiences of services are varied. Carers' Chat is a place where you may openly share your experiences, but it is not intended as a space for criticising services
