What do Carers' Ambassadors do?
Already there is a variety of roles available to Carers’ Ambassadors. We’re keen to ensure a user-led scheme – so if you don't see an opportunity here that appeals to you, tell us how you would prefer to be involved. The current roles are:
- Awareness Raising: Raise awareness in your local community by delivering talks and presentations about eating disorders, the experiences of carers and how to seek help
- Pop-up Surgeries: A new Beat initiative – already finding favour amongst many, and named the best volunteer experience to date by one Carers’ Ambassador. These are 2-hour drop-in sessions run by carers for carers. Find a venue and we’ll support you to promote and run your event, where you can use your knowledge and experience to help offer guidance, support and signposting to carers in your community
- Press, Media and Research: By working with Beat, you can be assured that your story will be conveyed sensitively and effectively, inspiring hope for other carers. You will receive full training and support from Beat about working with the media. Alternatively, you can participate in one of the great variety of research opportunities frequently offered by Beat
- Online support: For the technologically-minded…or not! Our new software is surprisingly easy to use. Since February 2010, carers have been connecting online via our Carers’ Live Chats. With brand new software in place, we’re all set to offer these sessions more frequently. We need Moderators to oversee and ensure the responsible use of the chats, which will range from open groups to siblings’ groups, 10 participants to 1-2-1 sessions. Moderators will receive training and frequent support from Beat
Who can be a Carers' Ambassador?
Historically, the word ‘carer’ has been misleading. However, consultation and debate with those who support people with eating disorders led to the conclusion that the word ‘carer’ is the best choice to describe those who make up this group.
We don’t want semantics to get in the way – to be a Carers’ Ambassador your relation to the person with an eating disorder who you support could be:
- Parent
- Sibling
- Partner (husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend)
- Other relative
- Friend
How can I get involved?
