The Beat Network: Self Help & Support Groups:
Beat’s Network of Self Help & Support Groups across the UK offers support and information to people over 18 affected by eating disorders. This may be those with eating distress in various stages of their illness and recovery, or carers, families and friends of individuals with an eating disorder.
Of the 81 current groups, 25 are dedicated Carers’ groups, a further 14 support both sufferers and carers, which includes the 6 groups within the Beat Cymru Project in Wales, and the rest are for sufferers of eating disorders. Each group is facilitated by at least two Beat registered Group Facilitators and everyone attending supports each other by sharing experiences, thoughts, successes and problems. All current Beat groups are OPEN groups and do not offer treatment, counselling or therapy, and referral to a Beat Group is not necessary.
Individuals may attend a Group as seldom or as often as they wish: Some people attend regularly while others may only go along once every couple of months.
Although the groups are affiliated with Beat, they are all unique and independent and together, the facilitators and people attending the group meetings decide its direction and the way it operates.
Many of the Carers’ groups arrange a programme of invited speakers on a variety of topics from specialists within the field of eating disorders, including psychologists and dieticians and other Carers’ and voluntary organisations.
